About Us...
Church Under the Bridge of San Antonio (CUB-SA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates a multifaceted outreach to the homeless of San Antonio, Texas. CUB-SA operates exclusively on the donations of those who are of like mind and spirit. For over 8 years we occupied a small building at 618 Avenue A (in the heart of San Antonio) which served as the physical focal point for the ministry. Now ministering back out under the US 281 bridge adjacent from our prior location as we await the construction of our new facility, we continue to serve those living on the street in the surrounding area. CUB-SA is overseen by a twelve member board of directors, each of whom is directly involved in some form of ministry here. We are, for the most part, a diverse collection of regular everyday working class people who simply love the Lord and take seriously His command to love "the least of these..." in practical ways. CUB-SA is led ultimately by the Lord Jesus Christ, Who not only guides and directs this work, but provides for and enables it. Praise HIS holy Name!
Our Story...
In the spring of 1997, a vision to minister to the homeless that had been burning in the hearts of three men became a reality. Skip Martin, Bruce Staffel, and Dennis Cawthon began to hold services and offer a hot meal to the countless homeless people that walk the streets of San Antonio. Associate Pastor Ray Jones of Community Bible Church in San Antonio (who also has a burning heart for evangelism and street ministry) was instrumental in bringing Skip, Bruce and Dennis together.
The ministry began just as the name of the "church" would suggest, under the overpass bridge at US Highway 281 near Broadway adjacent from the old Pearl Brewery. It was a modest beginning as Skip would bring his van and a camp stove. While Dennis sang and preached the gospel message of hope and salvation, Skip would prepare the meal. After the service, everyone would be fed and ministered to on a one-on-one basis as the ministry team would mingle with the group.
In 1998, Skip Martin was instrumental in securing facilities located at 618 Avenue A, adjacent to the site where the church had been meeting under the bridge. A building that had been a tavern for decades and stood in the shadow of the old Pearl Brewery now became a lighthouse of hope for all those desiring help. With his mission calling completed, Skip left as Dennis and Bruce carried on. Shortly thereafter, Paul Nadeau, Murray Barr, Bill Brockmeier and Peggy Inman joined forces with Dennis and Bruce. For almost two and a half years these men and women would meet faithfully on Sunday mornings to minister a hot meal as well as the Bread of Life to hungry souls.
In 1999 Dennis Cawthon accepted the call to become the church`s first official pastor. With this, many improvements to the facilities and ministry were made as it grew into a multi-faceted ministry with services, meals and clothing available on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Then in early 2000, Church Under the Bridge formally organized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit ministry with a Board of Directors consisting of Peggy Inman (Chairman), Dennis, Bill, Murray and Paul. Also by this time, there were many volunteers coming on a regular basis to prepare and serve meals as well as help Pastor Dennis with worship services.
In October of 2004, Pastor Dennis left to pursue the Lord`s calling to plant Mission City Bible Church in Converse, TX. Shortly after this, CUB-SA was notified by the landlord to vacate by the Spring of 2005. While this seemed to be a huge blow to the ministry, severely testing the faith of those remaining, God had other plans! Along the way, the Lord continued to bring bring in more and more servant hearts to the ministry. In spite of the ministry being notified it would need to move, the Lord managed to postpone the move at least 3 times as He began stirring a vision of the future in many hearts.
By October 2005 amid speculation that the ministry could be coming to an end, Gilbert and Murray decided to step down from their leadership role on the Board. It became apparent that God was ordaining new leadership for the very exciting but challenging times ahead for the ministry. A meeting was called in which over 20 like minded and spirited folks attended to discuss the future of Church Under the Bridge. "Would it continue or is God bringing the mission to a close?" were among the topics discussed. The most astounding news at the meeting was from that of a benefactor announcing God placing a calling in his heart with an offer of land and a new building for the ministry, all at no cost! New and dynamic leadership was definitely needed. The meeting concluded with a motion to elect a new Board of Directors and Officers that would be given the task of taking the ministry forward.
As of this writing, the property for the new ministry location has been acquired by the benefactor and the board is actively pursuing a new building project. Community Bible Church of San Antonio has been a faithful supporter, financially and spiritually, from the inception of this outreach. But many other churches in the San Antonio area have also been supportive of the vision.
Please see below for a complete listing of all churches that currently support CUB-SA. It is wonderful to see denominational boundaries transcended as the Body of Christ joins hands to reach out to give food to the hungry and hope to the hopeless.
