What We Do

Spiritual Food
Along with the physical feeding of those who come to Church Under the Bridge of San Antonio (CUB-SA), we provide for their spiritual nourishment as well.  Feeding people a hot meal is far from enough.  If someone`s stomach only is filled, and the heart is left empty, we have left the job less than half done.

The people we meet under the bridge have many needs and difficulties in their lives, but just as with those who live in comfortable homes and have stable jobs, their primary and overwhelming need is spiritual.  Our LORD has declared that EACH ONE has gone astray, and that only as EACH ONE comes to Him, can needs be properly and completely met.

Several "meals" of spiritual food are served throughout the week, consisting of a nutritious and tasty blend of worship music, prayer, and Bible teaching and preaching.  Our LORD`s Good News of love, repentance, and holiness is given faithful witness by many from San Antonio`s Christian community.

Physical Food
At least three times a week, CUB-SA provides nutritious, fresh-cooked hot meals to people who are hungry. Volunteers are always surprised at the personal blessings they receive as they minister here.   Most of the food is donated by local food suppliers, grocers, church cell groups, and other individuals.  The meals are prepared and served by volunteers who love the people who come.  Providing for the physical needs of others in want is commanded by our LORD and is a tangible expression of following His Good News of love.

A typical meal consists of meat, vegetables, bread and dessert. From day to day, the meals are quite varied, very nutritious, and always tasty.

"Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."  (Matthew 20:27)

Clothing and Personal Needs
People on the street have a great need for clothing and hygiene items; soap, toothpaste, razors, etc.  Life on the street is rough and it takes its toll on clothing.  Without large wardrobes (frequently just the clothes on their backs), a pair of pants or a shirt may be worn not just once a week but every day, causing them to wear out at a rapid pace.

CUB-SA receives clothing as donations from other ministries and individuals.  The clothes are inspected, washed if necessary, and sorted according to category and size.  At the facility on Avenue A, they are hung on racks where they await their new owners.

During the cool months of the year, blankets and coats are in high demand for those who live and sleep outside.  These move back out onto the street into the hands of grateful recipients almost as quickly as they arrive at CUB-SA.

"When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?  When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?`  "The King will reply, `I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.`"  (Matthew 25:38-40)

The People who gather at Church Under the Bridge, are loved by God, and the Lord Jesus calls us to love them with His love.
